Medical Representative Interview Questions & Answers

How to Use This Guide

Below are the most commonly asked MR interview questions with strong sample answers. Do not memorize word-for-word — understand the idea behind each answer, then say it in your own natural words.

1. Tell me about yourself.

(See the full self-introduction guide — keep it 60–90 seconds, structured: present → past → strengths → future.)

2. Why do you want to become a Medical Representative?

Answer idea: “I enjoy science, I am a people person, and I like field work with clear targets. This role combines all three — I get to use my knowledge, build relationships with doctors, and grow through performance.”

3. What does a Medical Representative do?

Answer idea: “An MR visits doctors and pharmacies daily, details the company’s products with scientific knowledge, builds professional relationships, books orders through distributors, and achieves monthly sales targets while reporting field activities honestly.”

4. Why should we hire you?

Answer idea: “I am hardworking, I communicate clearly, I learn products quickly, and I am comfortable with targets and field work. I will represent your company professionally in front of every doctor.”

5. What is ‘detailing’?

Answer idea: “Detailing is the structured presentation of a medicine to a doctor — explaining what it is, how it works, its benefits, dosage, and why it suits the doctor’s patients — usually in 2 to 3 minutes, using a visual aid.”

6. How will you handle a doctor who refuses to meet you?

Answer idea: “I will stay polite and professional, not take it personally, and try again at a better time. I will first build a relationship through the doctor’s staff, keep my visits short and valuable, and gradually earn the doctor’s trust.”

7. What will you do if you don’t achieve your monthly target?

Answer idea: “First I will honestly analyze why — fewer doctor visits, weak detailing, or stock issues at pharmacies. Then I will increase quality visits, improve my product knowledge, and discuss a recovery plan with my manager. I will never hide the real reason.”

8. Are you comfortable with daily field work and traveling?

Answer idea: “Yes. I understand this job is field-based. I am comfortable traveling daily within my territory, managing my own schedule, and working independently.”

9. How do you plan your daily visits?

Answer idea: “I divide doctors into A, B, and C categories by prescription potential. A-class doctors get visited most frequently. I plan my route the evening before to save time and cover 10–12 doctors plus pharmacies daily.”

10. What do you know about our company/products?

(Research before the interview!) Answer idea: “Your company is known for [cardiac/diabetic/antibiotic] products. I know your leading brand [name] is widely prescribed because [one genuine reason]. I am excited to represent such trusted products.”

11. A chemist says your product is not in stock. What will you do?

Answer idea: “I will check why — then ensure availability through our distributor, inform the doctor honestly, and follow up with the chemist until the stock is maintained. An MR must protect product availability.”

12. How will you remember so many product details?

Answer idea: “I study one product deeply at a time — its system, mechanism, benefits, and dosage — and connect it to real patient benefits. Understanding beats memorizing.”

13. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Strengths: “Communication, hard work, and relationship building.” Weakness (honest + improving): “I am new to field sales, so I am working on time management during visits — I have started planning my routes daily to improve.”

14. Where do you see yourself in 3 years?

Answer idea: “As a senior medical representative or area manager who consistently exceeds targets and mentors new team members — growing with this company.”

15. Do you have any questions for us?

Always ask something. Good options: “What does the training program for new MRs look like?” / “How is the territory for this position structured?” Never say “No, nothing.”

Final Tips
