Daily Tasks of a Medical Representative — Hour-by-Hour Guide

The Reality of an MR’s Day

A medical representative’s day is planned, not random. Top-performing MRs follow a disciplined daily routine. Here is what a professional field day looks like.

Morning: Planning (8:00 – 9:00 AM)

  1. Review yesterday’s work — which doctors were visited, what was promised, what is pending.
  2. Plan today’s route — list 10–12 doctors + 4–5 pharmacies in one geographic direction (never zigzag across the city).
  3. Check stock — confirm your key products are available with distributors; note any shortages to address.
  4. Prepare your kit — detailing pad, literature, samples, cards, diary.
  5. Set one daily goal — e.g., “Detail Product X to 5 doctors today” or “Book 3 pharmacy orders.”

Field Work: Doctor Visits (9:00 AM – 2:00 PM)

  • Visit 10–12 doctors daily (quality over quantity).
  • Follow the A/B/C priority: A-class doctors (high prescription potential) get the most frequent, best-prepared visits.
  • Each visit: greet → detail ONE key product clearly (2–3 minutes) → listen to the doctor → note feedback → thank and leave on time.
  • Never overstay — respect the doctor’s OPD rush. Short, valuable visits build long-term access.
  • Record every visit in your diary immediately: doctor name, product detailed, response, follow-up needed.

Midday: Pharmacy Visits (2:00 – 3:30 PM)

  • Visit 4–5 pharmacies daily.
  • Check: Is our product in stock? Is it displayed well? Any competitor activity?
  • Book orders, ensure distributor supply, build a friendly relationship with the chemist — they influence what gets dispensed.
  • Collect market feedback: which products are moving, what doctors are prescribing.

Afternoon: Follow-ups & Admin (3:30 – 5:00 PM)

  • Follow up on morning commitments (samples sent, information promised).
  • Complete the daily call report (DCR) honestly — visits made, products detailed, orders booked.
  • Update your manager on anything important (big order, competitor launch, doctor concern).
  • Prepare tomorrow’s route in the evening — never waste morning hours planning.

The Golden Rules

  1. Punctuality — start on time, every day. Discipline is visible.
  2. Honesty in reporting — fake visit reports destroy trust and careers.
  3. Consistency — visit the same doctors regularly; relationships compound.
  4. Product knowledge — study a little every day; never detail what you don’t understand.
  5. Respect everyone’s time — doctors’, chemists’, and your own.
