Why Body Language Matters
Interviewers decide a lot in the first 30 seconds — before you even finish your introduction. Your posture, eye contact, and gestures silently tell them whether you are confident, respectful, and professional. For a medical representative, who must impress doctors daily, body language is a core job skill.
Entering the Room
- Knock gently and wait for permission to enter.
- Walk in with a light smile — not rushed, not too slow.
- Greet: “Good morning, sir/ma’am” with a slight nod.
- Wait to be offered a seat. If not offered after a few seconds, politely ask: “May I sit down, please?”
The Handshake
- Offer a firm (not crushing) handshake, 2–3 seconds.
- Make eye contact and smile during it.
- In Pakistani professional settings, if the interviewer is of the opposite gender and does not extend a hand, a respectful nod with “Assalam-o-Alaikum / Good morning” is perfectly professional.
How to Sit — Step by Step
- Sit upright with your back touching the chair’s backrest — straight but not stiff like a rod.
- Feet flat on the floor, knees together (especially important for female candidates in shalwar kameez or formal dress).
- Hands: rest them calmly in your lap or lightly on the table — never in pockets, never crossed tightly across your chest.
- Lean slightly forward (about 10 degrees) when listening — it shows interest and engagement.
- Keep your bag on the floor beside your chair, not on the table or your lap.
Eye Contact
- Maintain natural eye contact about 60–70% of the time.
- When answering, look at the interviewer; brief glances away while thinking are natural.
- If there is a panel, distribute your gaze — speak mainly to the one who asked, glance at others.
- Avoid staring at the floor, ceiling, or your hands.
Hands & Gestures
- Use small, calm hand gestures to emphasize points — it shows confidence.
- Never: fidgeting with a pen, touching your face repeatedly, cracking knuckles, or checking your phone/watch.
- Keep your phone switched off or on silent — in your bag, not in your hand.
Voice
- Speak clearly at a moderate pace — not too fast (nervousness), not too slow.
- Smile naturally; a pleasant tone matters as much as words.
- If you don’t understand a question, say politely: “Could you please repeat that?” — never guess blindly.
Leaving the Room
- When the interview ends, stand up smoothly, smile, and say: “Thank you for your time and this opportunity.”
- Shake hands (or nod respectfully) and walk out calmly — don’t rush.
- Close the door gently behind you.
