How to Talk to Doctors & Pharmacies — MR Communication Guide

The Detailing Call: Your 3-Minute Performance

“Detailing” is the heart of an MR’s job — presenting a medicine to a doctor in 2–3 minutes. Master this structure:

Step 1: The Opening (20 seconds)

Greet warmly, introduce the purpose in one line:

“Good morning, doctor. Today I want to share 2 minutes on our new antacid — it gives faster relief in acidity with a single daily dose.”

Always ask permission for their time — it shows respect.

Step 2: The Presentation — FAB (90 seconds)

Explain using FAB: Feature → Advantage → Benefit.

  • Feature: “It contains [ingredient] in [strength].”
  • Advantage: “Unlike older options, it starts working in 15 minutes.”
  • Benefit: “So your patients get quick relief and better compliance.”

Use the visual aid — point, don’t just talk. Doctors are visual learners.

Step 3: Handle Questions (30 seconds)

Listen fully before answering. If you know the answer, give it briefly with science. If you don’t: “That’s a good question, doctor. Let me confirm with our medical team and update you tomorrow.” — then actually do it. Never invent an answer.

Step 4: The Close (20 seconds)

End with a soft, professional close: “Doctor, would you consider trying it in 2–3 suitable patients this week? I’ll follow up on their response.” Thank them and leave on time.

Way of Talking to Doctors — Do’s and Don’ts

Do:

  • Be polite, confident, and brief — doctors are always short on time.
  • Use simple scientific language, not heavy jargon.
  • Listen more than you speak — understand before convincing.
  • Remember personal details (respectfully): “How was your conference, doctor?”
  • Follow up on every promise, every time.

Don’t:

  • Never criticize a competitor’s product in front of a doctor — it looks unprofessional. Instead, highlight your product’s strengths.
  • Never argue, even if the doctor is wrong — stay graceful.
  • Never overstay your welcome — 3 minutes, then out.
  • Never discuss prices negatively or make false claims.

Visiting Pharmacies — The Right Way

The chemist is your partner, not a lesser stop. A pharmacy visit has its own flow:

  1. Greet warmly and ask about business — build a human relationship first.
  2. Stock check: Is our product available? Is it visible on the shelf? Note expiries.
  3. Orders: Book replenishment orders; connect the chemist with your distributor for supply.
  4. Feedback: Which of our products are moving? What are doctors prescribing lately? Any competitor schemes?
  5. Schemes & support: Explain any trade offers clearly and honestly — never overpromise.

The Language of Trust

Whether with a doctor or a chemist, the principles are the same:

  • Honesty — say what the product does; never exaggerate.
  • Consistency — visit regularly; trust is built over months.
  • Respect — for their time, knowledge, and position.
  • Gratitude — always thank them for their time and support.

An MR who talks with honesty and respect becomes the rep doctors want to meet — and that is the real secret of high sales.
